Re: Pride, Prejudice, & the Undead.
Sister, Well my questions is whether or not the main Pride and Prejudice characters, themselves, are zombies. Because if so, this casting would need to vastly change. However, since we don’t have that tidbit of information, I will go on as if it is Pride and Prejudice, all the same characters, but with zombies attacking Netherfield.
I agree with most every casting choice you made. But have some questions and comments:
First of all, Maggie. Can she do a good English accent? Because I don’t want another Natalie Portman in V For Vendetta fiasco, in which the whole movie is tainted by embarrassingly bad drops of “r”s. No thank you.
That’s about all I have a problem with. I agree whole-heartedly that Mr. Collins need not be played by Michael Cain, the always wise and wise cracking Brit that he is. Oh, and we should also exclude Morgan Freeman. Because as much as I love him, he fills the same description as Michael, except American rather than Londonish.
Ok, now we move on to who you didn’t cast:
Charlotte Lucas: Judy Greer. Who else to play the slightly unattractive best friend who gives mediocre advice?
Mr. Collins: Truly no one can play him like David Bamber, but since we’re going Hollywood.. I say Alan Cumming because he’s awkward and nervous and would bring a new, homosexual undertone to the character that is much needed in this day and time.
Mary: Well, as we’ve learned from Ugly Betty, as long as you put thick glasses and braces on a person (even an ATTRACTIVE person) they automatically become hideous. So this can be filled by anyone. So maybe this part could be played by Emily Blunt in glasses. Or Kate Hudson in glasses. Or maybe America Ferrera herself.
Anne de Bourgh: Stephen Lee Sheppard in a wig.
Now, the most important part: the director.
How to find a perfect blend of someone who can direct good adaptations of classic novels or capture English culture (ex. Ang Lee, an undead Robert Altman… hey that might be perfect) and also have a good gorey, zombie resumé (ex. George A. Romero or pre-Spiderman Sam Raimi). Hmmm. Well, Edgar Wright, director of Shaun of the Dead definitely has British and zombies down. But how would he do with Pride and Prejudice? Would he successfully be able to represent feminism vi the UNDEAD? I simply don’t know. Maybe Peter Jackson who pretty accurately adapted Lord of the Rings and has a history of gore (Braindead, Bad Taste) would do a good job. But there would be too much riding on it and he would probably overdo production (King Kong). So, basically 1998 Peter Jackson would be perfect, but now he has too much power, bless his heart.
I have just been struck with the brilliant stick: Neil Marshall. Who? Neil Marshall. He wrote and directed the Descent: British - check, feminism - check, scary ass monsters that make me almost shit myself every time I see it- check. Done.
But don’t let Lionsgate be at the helm, am I right?
Sorry. You probably don’t know what that means.
